How to Tell Real AI Prep from a Marketing Label

Does it generate novel questions? If the platform serves you from a fixed set of 1,000 questions — even with an AI chatbot that explains them — it's a traditional question bank with a chat interface. The core limitation (finite problems, no adaptation) hasn't changed.
Does it adapt difficulty? Ask the platform (or observe) whether the problems get harder as you improve and easier when you struggle. A genuinely adaptive system adjusts continuously. A static bank with shuffled order doesn't.

Does it change your study plan based on your performance? If the study path is a fixed 12-week schedule that looks the same for every student, AI isn't driving the core experience. It might be decorating it.
What AI Doesn't Do
It doesn't study for you. A perfectly personalized study plan that sits untouched helps exactly no one. The efficiency gains from adaptive practice only materialize if you actually show up and do the work.
It doesn't replace conceptual understanding. AI can identify that you're struggling with thermodynamics, generate targeted practice, and provide detailed explanations. But if the underlying concept requires a fundamentally new mental model — not just more practice reps — you may need a textbook chapter, a lecture, or a conversation with someone who can explain it a different way. AI practice is the primary vehicle. It isn't the only vehicle.
It doesn't provide accountability or motivation. Study groups, deadlines, and the structure of a formal course serve psychological functions that technology doesn't replicate. The best outcomes come from combining adaptive AI (for efficiency) with human structures (for motivation).
